"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand Utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents. And to live now as we think human beings should live in defiance of all that is bad around us is itself a marvelous victory." -Howard Zinn

some thoughts on being home, an excerpt

“It is heartening to see all the national awareness campaigns - from Ako Mismo, One Tama, to all the shirts and accessories sporting the sun and three stars.  Heartening, but I am wary about all of it being just for show.  A few days ago, I posed a question on my facebook account: Who are you voting for?  …Are you voting at all? And no one replied.  People respond to Mafia Wars and Restaurant City requests, but with all the Proud to be Pinoy campaigns around, nobody had a second to answer yes or no or even, what for?  Again, I take this as how things are, not how things are always going to be.  I am still deciding on who to support this coming elections, and I will keep on asking people about their opinions, about their stand.  Some are bound to respond.

There are still a lot of street kids around, and the other night, I got so sad because a kid about 6 or 7 years old was playing around while we were withdrawing money from an ATM.  His older brother reprimanded him when he got a bit close to the machine while we were using it.  I looked at him and he flashed this mischievous, innocent smile, knowing what he was doing and what he was making us think/feel, clearly without the intention of robbing us, but coming close enough to solicit a reaction from us.  Like a kid taunting an adult, just to solicit a reaction, just to get attention, just to have some fun for himself, without meaning any harm.  His smile reminded me of the carefree smile of one of my godsons, and my heart broke.  So many childhoods stolen in this country.  So many.”
