Filipino boys sit together to keep themselves warm as they wait for vehicles to beg for alms in a heavy downpour in Manila, Philippines, Thursday, June 23, 2011. Tropical Storm Meari will be set to make its presence known as it strengthens into a Category 1 typhoon sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. It will continue [moving] on its northwestward [path] to the northeast of the Philippines. (AP)

Heartbreaking. Please, let’s all try and do something - however small, however big - so this won’t have to be.

As my sister would say, Nomnomnomnomnom.
It would be AWESOME to have this for dinner tonight.  I must say that the best meals for me are either homecooked or in places like Aida’s and the Pala-Pala in Bacolod (where the photo above was taken, and the scallops pictured above heartily eaten).  No fancy-schmancy stuff required, eating with my hands preferred.

Ang Aming Parol
Things that make our home ours.  And more than things, there are memories, thoughts, and feelings that are very much alive in this home that we’ve made - and continue to make - for ourselves.

"To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget." -Arundhati Roy

ellobofilipino:

Got this from a friend who works for an environment conservation and indigenous rights advocacy group in Mindanao. He considers them as Asia’s Most Beautiful Waterfalls. I wouldn’t know if that would be true for others, but they surely look nice. Here are the directions to place if you are in the Philippines, more particularly if you are in Mindanao.

Baranggay Boboanan, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur. From the highway of Cumawas, Bislig City, turn right if you’re heading towards the city. This is around 12 kilometers from the highway, passing along Baranggay San Isidro and Baranggay Bagsakan, traversing the rainforest haven of Boboanan. The entrance fee is 10 Pesos per person with free parking fee. Cottages’ rates are from 50 to 150 Pesos only.

Places like this and those in Camiguin Island, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and several other places in Mindanao really make me miss the land of my birth. There’s really more to Mindanao than what people see on the news.

Notes from Home now has 2,283 followers!  I was supposed to give a “gift” to the 2010th follower, but he/she beat me to it.  So, to add a little twist, a donation of Php500.00 shall be given to a charity chosen by the 2,500th follower or whoever can give me the name (common and scientific) of the plant pictured above - whoever comes first.  I forgot to ask for its name so I’ve been calling it “plant with shavings.”
The nonprofit organization should be one of Ayala Foundation USA’s partners, listed here.  Keep in mind that Php500.00 can feed a child for a month, plant five seedlings, provide support to a cancer-stricken patient, and so on and so forth.  Choose the cause that speaks to you the most, or one that you deem has the most urgent need.  The donation will be made in the “winner’s” name.
Thank you for reading my posts.
